Lake Powell is a great place to vacation. There is something of interest for all ages and lifestyles, from the sedentary to the extremely active. Although our lake adventure was enjoyed from a houseboat, there are many other ways to visit Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon area. Day trips, jeep tours, hiking, fishing, motorboat excursions, and photography expeditions are just some of the many ways to enjoy the scenery. There are many museums and books available to give you some history of the area, and of Civil War veteran Major John Wesley Powell.

The one-armed Major Powell, for whom Lake Powell was named, first led an expedition into this uncharted and unknown territory in 1869. Only a handful of his large party survived to return from this journey. He kept detailed notes of his remarkable odyssey, the charting of which led many to follow in his footsteps.

In 1956 the Glen Canyon Dam project was started, and in 1963 it was finished. Shortly after completion of the dam, the area now known as Lake Powell began to fill. It took seventeen years for the lake to fill the first time. The area was declared a National Recreation Area in 1972, and is visited by over 3 million people annually.
