You should have been there! Where? Why, Roots Crossing in Antis Township, the Borough of Bellwood, Blair County, PA, on November 4, 1937. That’s when I was born -- and in the home my Dad built! I don’t remember, but my brother, Bob, said the walls were not even finished on the inside.

I was a little over 2 years old when daddy moved us to Niagara Falls, NY, for a job there. About 1942, the farm on Chestnut Street in East Wilson was bought and we moved to the country. Now that was great! Wilson Central was our school clear up to graduation. I went to Burrough’s Booking School up in Buffalo and then went to work at the Marine Trust Co. in Niagara Falls, NY.
In 1959 I decided to move to Miami with my buddy Richard Schillingeton. He didn’t stay long, but I did for 3 months. I came home and worked for Arnold Karston’s John Deere Dealership for the summer. That fall, another buddy, Rod Eaton, asked me to go Baylor University with him. I did go, but only to night school and worked days until there was no work available for me.

My Life as a Child – By Pat, June 2008
I was born on October 16, 1935 in Bellwood, Pennsylvania. I remember a little about living in Pennsylvania. I know that Daddy built the house where we lived. There was a creek behind it. I seem to think that I fell in there once, but don’t know for sure about that. Was there a little bridge across it? I don’t remember.
I guess I was a little brat. (Me??) The story goes that when Mom & Daddy left to go someplace, they had to stop at the store up by the highway to have them watch for me, because I would run after the car. I wanted to go too. I kind of remember going at times to a baby-sitter’s house once in a while, where I kicked and screamed when Mom & Daddy left. Again, I guess I wanted to go too. I also think I heard that one time I was going to run away from home when I was a little kid. Don’t know – don’t remember that.

The last of the 6 kids, I was born on June 6, 1943 in Lockport Memorial Hospital, New York. When I was born, Aunt Helen Rohrbaugh came to take care of the other five kids. A short time after she returned home, my parents asked her to come back to take care of the younger five as Bud ended up in the hospital with lock jaw from stepping on a rusty nail. That was the just the beginning of a bond between me and Helen that remains to this day.
As a kid growing up in the country, my main entertainment was riding bike or climbing trees. I had one doll with a buggy that I played with. My parents had bought it at Karsten’s for me one Christmas.
We had an apple orchard next to door to our property and one across the road. We had some apple, peach and pear trees on our property which were good climbing trees. I especially liked to climb the Queen Anne cherry tree in the front yard and sit there and eat cherries. Cousin, Judy Enyeart (Michaels) grew up in the city but spent many summers with us, so I had to teach her how to climb trees. She loved to eat the cherries also, but always ended up getting a stomach ache and I would get into trouble. It was her choice so I don't know why it I would get into trouble.

The following pages are memories written by our special Aunt Helen, Carl’s only living sibling. She has always been a special person in the lives of all the Cramer kids and we are so glad that she is able to be a part of our sibling reunions. (forward by Carol Cramer Jones)

HELEN CRAMER ROHRBAUGH (Carl Cramer’s youngest sister)
I was born on June 4, 1926, as the fifth child of Archie and Maude Marshall Cramer. My brother Carl was 17 at the time of my birth, Thora 15, Lucille 13 and Lillian almost 3. My nice 3 bedroom home was the one built by my Dad, with the help of his brothers Harry and Frank, before 1920 in Antis Township close Bellwood, PA. I went to the same schoolhouse all 12 grades. |
