Matt and Dana went on a road trip to Arizona, Utah, and Colorado in October. They drove to Flagstaff with "the boy" Hosteen and visited with Matt's parents and sister. A second road trip then commenced with Paul and Cindy joining in, leaving Suzanne behind with Kate and Kip, and Hosteen at the kennel with the mountain view, where he was signed up for daily mountain walks.
We drove first to Monument Valley, Utah, where we spent the night at Gouldings. Up early the next morning, we had a cold and breezy, but interesting and informative, guided tour in the back of a jeep through Monument Valley. With us were people from Australia, Germany, South Korea, and the U.S. The guided tour takes you to places you cannot go in the self-guided tour, and here Dana had her hair braided by 86 year old Susie in a hogan. Susie and her young friend (in her 70s we were told) were carding and spinning wool by hand. Dana had the experience of visiting an outhouse a little way from the hogan. When she got there she found that there was no door, but the opening faced the mountain, away from the rest of the compound, so she had a lovely view of the mountain from the seat.
Later that day we drove to Colorado, spending one night here and one night there, driving through beautiful country, with our roadside geology books at hand. Whoever road shotgun was the reader of the roadside geology of the area we were traveling through. One day we drove 50 miles or more on a dirt road, stopping frequently for photo opportunities. We stopped at the mining town of Ouray and spent some time at a very interesting mining museum there. We had lunch one day at the True Grit Cafe in Ridgway. Yup, the same True Grit of John Wayne fame.
We saw many fine sites on our trip, and after 5 days headed back to Flagstaff, where we got the boy out of coventry. Here we took a few more nice drives up into the mountains. Some of the roads were treacherous and narrow, with steep drop-offs on one side. We had a picnic at Locket Meadow, went up to Schultz Pass, and some other drives. Our drive to the lookout at the top of the San Francisco Peaks above Flagstaff was aborted partway when the road became so bad that we couldn't punish the vehicle any longer. And at that point all the banging and bumping around wasn't fun anymore.
We encountered many delicious meals in Flagstaff including Suzanne's fabulous Yorkshire pudding, and some very good perch, not from Lake Erie, but very good nevertheless.
On the way back to Dallas we visited with Alan and Finley, some friends from Dallas who have moved to a lovely place in Placitas, outside Albuquerque. We spent a night there, and were privileged to partake of Alan's famous margueritas and enchiladas.
