The Big Storm of 2004

The Second Wave

On June 12 at around 7 pm I heard a loud cracking sound. Matt and Mike had just drove off to pick up pizzas, and I looked out the front window to see a 30 foot branch of our tree slowly hit the street, blocking the entire intersection. The boys had two minutes before driven under it. This is the tree that had the power pole hanging in it for four days before the crew came to fix it, and the wires it brought down are the same cable wires that Glen's tree brought down on June 1st. There was no wind at all, and it looked like it must have been already broken and just waiting for the right moment to come down.

Many neighbors came out and we had a nice visit in the street. Quite a few cars came down the street, only to find they had to turn around in someone's driveway and go back. Since we are right at the corner, no through traffic can pass, which is actually kind of nice. The streets guy came and said he couldn't do anything until the cable guy got the cable out of there. The cable guy came and said he couldn't do anything until the city or Encore got the tree out of there. Then the phone guy came to make sure there weren't any phone lines involved (there weren't) and stayed to pet our dog and chat on the porch.

On Sunday, the 13th, a crew came and started cutting up the tree. They got the broken end of the branch, which was quite large and was still hanging by a thread to its broken other half, to finally come crashing down. They worked for a short time and suddenly left. Its still blocking the street as of this writing.

Here are the latest pictures of tree and little Lilli, our newest addition to the family.

Its just huge.
Its blocking the entire intersection. We kind of like it that way..
Probably when the power pole broke it broke the tree, but we never noticed anything wrong.
Here you can see the cables.
A great topic for neighborhood block party.
Good thing no one was near it at the time.
You can see the bottom part of the broken power pole is still there, waiting to be taken out.
We are going to lose some valuable shade in the early afternoons.
View from across the street.
She's purty.
Now that she is more confident, she doesn't like to be held.
She has a golden nose and a golden toe.
